Mr. Melendrez
About your Superintendent

To the communities of Genoa and Hugo,

It is an incredible honor to serve as Superintendent of Genoa-Hugo School District. Our district is more than a school, it is the heart of two proud communities united by tradition, relationships, and an unwavering belief in our children. Together, we are creating a future in which every student is empowered to learn, grow, excel, and succeed as a contributor to both the local and global community.

Our students deserve opportunities that are as big as their dreams. We remain committed to expanding academic achievement, athletics, activities, career and technical education, real-world learning, and meaningful community engagement. Whether students plan to attend college, enter the workforce, serve their country, or return home to strengthen our rural communities, our responsibility is to help them discover their purpose and prepare them to pursue it with confidence.

I’m beginning my 5th year at Genao-Hugo and my 24th year in education. My journey has included classroom teaching, district administration, eLearning coordination, work with expelled and at-risk student services, the Colorado Education Initiative’s Homegrown Talent Initiative, and multi-district initiatives. I also had the privilege of coaching men’s soccer at the Division I collegiate level. Each of these experiences reinforced a lesson that continues to guide my leadership: great things happen when people believe in one another, work toward a shared purpose, and refuse to settle for less than their best.

At Genoa-Hugo, our Pirate Graduate Profile and its foundation of Accountability, Respect, and Grit (ARG) represent who we are and who we want our students to become. These qualities prepare young people to overcome challenges, lead with character, and make a positive difference wherever life takes them. I remain committed to doing what is best for our children, earning the trust and respect of our communities, supporting our exceptional staff, and growing opportunities for every student.

The strength of Genoa-Hugo is found in our “we are in this together” culture. Our accomplishments belong to everyone: students who work hard, staff members who give their best, families who believe in our schools, and community members who continually step forward to support Pirate Nation. By honoring our traditions while courageously pursuing new possibilities, we will continue building a legacy of excellence for generations to come.

I am proud to live and breathe the Pirate culture and grateful to serve the communities of Genoa and Hugo. Our future is bright, our purpose is clear, and our greatest achievements are still ahead of us.

Together, we will learn. Together, we will grow. Together, we will achieve greatness.

GO PIRATES!

Sincerely, Dan Melendrez Superintendent Genoa-Hugo School District C-113
